Remembering Lee Kuan Yew: Documentary Work of Singapore's Mindy Tan

Singapore's first prime minister Lee Kuan Yew is hailed as the founding father of Singapore. He held his position for around three decades. He is also an integral part of Singaporean culture and identity. Lee Kuan Yew passed away in 2015, causing Singaporeans all over the world to grieve.

Singaporean photographer Mindy Tan captured the nation's grief in her documentary work titled Remembering Lee Kuan Yew

Mindy's narrative for the series is sincere and patriotic:

"Perhaps this queuing and waiting to say our goodbyes was a way of dealing with the grief, made better by sharing amongst masses, we were people with only one intention, to say Thank You. I felt like a kampong, all were family. It was the sight of families arriving togethe, the awkward father-son interactions, or a child in school uniform being woken from sleep by his parents. Because you are Singaporean. We all have a bit of Lee Kuan Yew in us. His pragmatism, incorruptibility, and I think, that sense of responsibility as Confucian-Asians. On the 29th March on the muddied field we stood for over an hour, the rain relentlessly beating down on us. It was basic. No fancy platforms. Only our feet on the ground in silence. The rain was so torrential, no matter what shoes and clothes you wore, we were soaked to the bone. Quietly, I could not be more proud to be Singaporean, to be united in this mourning, to have the same sense of belonging and duty, this love yet trepidation for the future of Singapore."

Mindy is also our LomoAmigo. For more of her work, visit her website.
