Gigs and Memories: The Lomo'Instant Automat and Singapore's Disco Hue

Singaporean synth-pop quartet Disco Hue took the Lomo'Instant Automat on the road. Members Sherlyn Leo, Auzaie Zie, Rush Ang, and Billy Chua stopped by to share their photos and chat with the Lomography team.

Hello, and welcome to the Lomography Magazine! Please introduce yourselves to our readers.

Billy: Hello! We are Disco Hue, a four-piece synth-pop band based in Singapore. You’ll find that we’re a good mix of youthful spunk and heart-string pulling vibes

How and when did Disco Hue start? What inspired you to make music together?

Zie: It started almost six years ago as a passion project! The previous vocalist and I just wanted to form a band that plays electronic music live. We were super inspired by bands like Panic! At The Disco and Ella Riot (formerly known as My Dear Disco). You can clearly see where our name was derived from (haha)! Over time, members came and left but this current line-up has stuck. We started writing together over the years to slowly shape who we are today.

What genre of music do you consider your work to be?

Rush: Disco Hue’s work doesn’t only stick to one genre of music. It takes inspiration from quite a wide range of music as the four of us are influenced by different genres of music. But if you had to catergorize it to one genre, it would be pop. We love '80s and '90s pop songs, but we always mix it up with modern sounds to make it sound a little more like us.

Who are your major influences?

Zie: I think each and every one of us has different influences, but they all always seem to overlap. Sort of like a venn diagram! However, I'd like to think the band, collectively, is greatly inspired by bands from Panic! At The Disco and Paramore to acts like Bruno Mars and Ariana Grande. That's quite a mix!

Tell us a little more about your Lomo'Instant Automat experience? Any challenges or interesting stories?

Sherlyn: We're used to capturing dozens of images on our phone instantly and spamming as we go, so restricting ourselves to one image and patiently waiting for it to develop has made these pictures so much more meaningful to us! We love the way film instantly gives that retro yet timeless look, and incorporating that into our lives has been a dream because it has made posting on social media that much simpler — #nofilter needed.

Do you have ongoing or upcoming projects that you would like to tell us about?

Billy: We’re currently working on our new album and it’s very interesting because of how we conceptualize our album. And the Lomography philosophy really helps because it helps us capture the essence of what we want the album to be. You will find some vibes from the 80s/90s, but still very relevant to today’s age.
