Newcomer of the Week: Eduardo Espinoza Chávez (@lalomixu)

México-based cinephile Eduardo Espinoza Chávez's (@lalomixu) passion for analogue photography started out during his stint as a film projectionist. Inspired by the works of Wong Kar Wai, he now explores the creative possibilities of film photography with his beautifully executed double exposure photographs and stereoscopic images. Get to know our talented Community newcomer in this short interview.

Please tell us something about yourself and what you do.

I love the cinema. I used to work in several exhibitions as a projectionist and I came to work in film. I believe that my love for photography was born from this. I started shooting in digital, but now 80% of what I do is in analogue. I stopped working in theaters, but now I talk about movies on my YouTube channel and make videos about analogue cameras. I almost forgot: I love double exposures!

How did you find the Community and who/what convinced you to join?

I knew of the existence of the community through Lomography Mexico since I use Lomography films, accessories, etc., but the person who convinced me to join was Tania (@moda_daniela). He encouraged me to upload my photos and I was surprised by the reception. I am pleased to be part of a talented community that loves analogue photography.

As you read the 10 Golden Rules of Lomography, what rule do you apply in your everyday life?

Rule No. 10 (Do not worry about the rules): I do not care if I do not have the best composition or if the photos are not perfectly framed. If I'm able to recreate what I have in mind, I'm satisfied.

Rule No. 9 (You don't have to know what you've captured afterwards either): Sometimes I am surprised with the results. On some shots, I don't even remember the exact moment when it was taken or how it was created.

Rule No. 7 (Be fast): It is good to be quick and to not let go of a good opportunity.

Rule No. 5 (Approach the objects of your Lomographic desire as close as possible): It doesn't bother me to get up close to the object I want to photograph.

In this digital age, why do you still shoot on film?

There are several reasons. First, because of nostalgia. Earlier, I mentioned working with film in a cinema. It was a romantic experience to have the tape in your hands.

Second, because I like double exposure, but doing it naturally and without editing. Having to draw the image directly in the shot is a wonderful creative process.

Third, I also like creating 3D gifs using the original, a stereoscopic camera with four lenses. Nothing of the so-called effect Mura Masa created with digital cameras.

Your favorite analogue camera as of the moment? Why?

Currently I have two: a Canon Rebel G, which makes creating double exposures easier, and a Nishika N8000 for 3D gifs. I have also been experimenting with double exposures with the Nishika and the result is quite interesting.

What is the Lomography camera you’d want to have someday?

I would like to own a Lomo LC-Wide. It is very practical for me and I would use it everywhere.

Any song, book, or movie you live by?

I really like Wong Kar-Wai's cinema. His visuals inspire and amaze me.

Share your current favorite Lomograph, could be yours or a friend’s. Why is this your favorite?

I did it at the beginning of the year and really exceeded my expectations. I had an idea of what I wanted to achieve, but it is much better than I expected.

Any Community member you look up to? If so, why him or her?

What attracted me to do double exposures and without a doubt a model to follow is @hodachrome. I consider him the best in this area and I really hope to be able to take one of his workshops someday.

What are you looking forward to in our Community?

I hope to continue getting to know about the amazing work of people who love analogue photography all over the world. To be able to learn something from them, find inspiration in their images, and learn from articles with themes that are of my interests.
