Making Memories with the Lomo'Instant Sanremo — Interview with Vasilis Kavousakis

There's something deeply nostalgic about being able to hold a printed image. In this day and age of digital photography, our moments come in the form of pixels rather than physical, tangible prints. As a professional portrait and wedding photographer, Vasilis Kavousakis always tries to bring something fresh and unique for his clients and subjects. Not too long ago, we discovered that he had been using the Petzval 85 Lens for a wedding shoot, amplifying the romantic mood. Vasilis recently took another break from his DSLR and went back to his analogue roots — this time, through instant photography. Thanks to the Lomo'Instant Sanremo, Vasilis was able to make more personalized souvenirs. Here's how he captures milestones in a more intimate medium with instant snaps.

Hi again Vasilis! You've used the Petzval lens before for your professional work and we've heard you have also used the Lomo'Instant Sanremo. What made you take a break from common photographic gear?

Hi! I used Lomo’Instant Sanremo Edition. I chose it for the procedure. It is something totally different from digital equipment. Keeping the photograph in your hands is not the same as a screen on a digital camera.

The thing about instant cameras is that they always capture the moment as is, while also providing a visualization of the moment as soon as possible. What was it like for you as a professional photographer to be able to capture beautiful moments like weddings through the Lomo’Instant Sanremo?

For that reason exactly. Because they capture the moment and at the same time you can give it directly to the client. They like it a lot, they are thrilled!

When was the first time you used the Lomo’Instant Sanremo? What were your first impressions?

It was in 2016 when I saw an instant photograph in a blog or social network and I immediately bought it. I like the whole procedure of shooting, as well as the imperfections and analogue color which you cannot see in a digital one.

May you share your favorite feature of the Lomo’Instant Sanremo with us?

I prefer not using a flash, only if it is necessary, and with a standard lens. With Lomo’Instant Sanremo I feel freer in what I am doing, with no rules.I enjoy the moment of procedure more than my professional camera. It is like a little break in the sometimes rigorous flow of work.

What were your favorite moments that you captured with the instant camera?

My most favorite moments with Lomo’Instant Sanremo was at a wedding with a lot of children, bridesmaids, and when I took the first photograph, they were so excited that they would not let me work for quite long. They finally left me when the second roll of film was over... it was really funny, haha!

Lastly! Any on-going project, or other plans you're looking forward to working on?

My future plans are to work with Lomo’Instant Sanremo alongside my portrait work, as a diary of my work.
