We’re thrilled to introduce you to the newest addition to the Lomography Art Lens family — Petzval 55 mm f/1.7 MKII Art Lens. You might be wondering what makes it different from the other Petzval lenses, or if you’re new to Lomography, you’re probably curious about the Petzval family.
The Lomography Petzval Art Lens family is an extension of the original Petzval Lens created in 1840 by Professor Joseph Petzval. The lens was legendary, and we thought that it would be really fantastic if we could enjoy it today. And so, two centuries later, we introduced the New Petzval Art Lens.
2013: The New Petzval 85 Art Lens
It was truly a labor of love. We started from scratch, studying documents and handling as many original Petzval lenses as possible so that we could somehow experience the passion and ingenuity of Joseph Petzval. Our goal was to make this impeccable lens available for modern-day digital and analogue photographers. We worked with Zenit to realise this vision, and together, created the New Petzval 85 Art Lens. This lens produces photographs with a distinctive look — sharp and crisp in the center, swirly bokeh effects, vignetting, and intense color saturation. It was made to be used with all Canon EF and Nikon F mount analogue and digital cameras, giving photographers and filmmakers a creative way of shooting photos and videos.
2015: The New Petzval 58 Bokeh Control Art Lens
Two years after the Petzval 85 was conceived, we took on another challenge to create a new Petzval lens, based on the feedback that we received. This time, we aimed to fulfill the request for more control over the bokeh effect and a more standard focal length. Our experience in making the Petzval 85 gave us the confidence to move on with our next project. Still keeping Joseph Petzval’s original invention in mind, we built the New Petzval 58 with a maximum aperture of f/1.9 and a 58mm focal length. What’s more, it was equipped with the Bokeh Control Ring, which allows the user to adjust the swirl of the bokeh effect. By simply rotating the ring from 1 to 7, photographers and filmmakers have the option to make the swirl subtle or strong.
2019: The New Petzval 55 mm f/1.7 MKII Art Lens
This year, we are pleased to introduce you to our latest Petzval creation — the New Petzval 55 mm f/1.7 MKII Art Lens. This new lens promises versatility for Nikon Z, Canon RF, and Sony E users. The New Petzval 55 MKII features a focal length of 55mm and a maximum aperture of f/1.7, making it suitable for capturing the bigger picture as well as the subtle isolation of subjects. It is also designed to support 4K video shooting and enhanced sharpness across the entire f/stop range. And of course, the signature bokeh is not to be missed — finally, photographers and filmmakers who use mirrorless cameras can now employ the Petzval aesthetic in their creative endeavors.
The Petzval 55 mm f/1.7 MKII is created with discerning photographers and filmmakers in mind. This versatile 55mm art lens brings the unique look of Joseph Petzval’s original lens to full frame mirrorless cameras. This art lens is designed to allow full creative flexibility, with its 7 levels of Bokeh Control and Dual Aperture system.
