LomoChrome Metropolis XR 100–400: Positano with Nicola D'Orta

Photographer Nicola D’Orta recently shot a fashion series in Positano, one of the most beautiful places in South Italy, using our new emulsion LomoChrome Metropolis XR 100–400 film, Nicola works as a portrait and fashion photographer. Here are his comments on the newest Lomography film.

Could you give us a brief introduction about yourself and your approach/philosophy when it comes to photography?

Hi there, I’m Nicola D'Orta, a professional photographer living in Naples. I’ve been shooting ever since I was 13. I shoot both digital and film. My shots are a nice blend of portraiture and fashion photography taken with both analogue and digital cameras. My pictures try to bring out the details, focusing on the faces and trying to capture the emotions of that moment. In my opinion, this is photography.

Let's get technical! When you tested our new film, which camera, and lens did you use? Did you use strobes or available light?

For this series, I used a Leica SL 1968 with a lens 45/90 f 2.8 and I took advantage of natural light. My shots should reflect authenticity without any compromise.

Could you say a few words about the photos you’ve taken with our new film?

This project is an editorial fashion series at the Positano beach with the use of an analog and a digital camera. The model is Cristina Losyuk.

Finally, what are your thoughts about the new LomoChrome Metropolis film?

Shooting in low-light, the film has gorgeous spots of colors in the red but keeps great cold tones. Exposed to 400 ISO, this film was a real and full of details in the shadows and with a delicious and fine grain, a symbol of the high-quality film. The dynamic range shooting is not too large by the contrast which presented. I'd have preferred to more detail on the highlight, but I realize that's not possible because I shot through backlight without a panel or fill-in flash. So I expected a little. In any case, I appreciate it very much. I can say that I am fully satisfied with this new film!

In your own words, what makes this film unique?

A high color rendering and a pleasant grain!

Would you use this film for street photography?

When I get the chance to choose where to take pictures, my favorite sets are streets sites or landscapes. I definitely want to shoot the LomoChrome Metropolis again and I would recommend it to all colour negative films’ lovers!

Would you use this film for portraits?

Well, the slight and magnificent grain is perfect to erase the little skin imperfections. And thanks to its reddish tones, the film renders wonderful skin tones.

Based on your experience with the film, which situations do you think the film looks best?

I would use it again for portraits and landscapes shots!
