Jamie Lawson: A Break Away with the Lomo'Instant Automat

UK based singer-songwriter Jamie Lawson is back with his 5th album release on Ed Sheeran's label Gingerbread Man Records. We sent him a Lomo'instant Automat to document his holiday and he talked to us about what's coming up in his busy world.

Tell us a bit about yourself?

My name is Jamie Lawson, I am a song-writer and a singer who very much enjoys taking photographs. I've been writing songs since I was 15 years old and hopefully, soon I'll get good at it! Having said that I did win an Ivor Novello award for best song musically and lyrically for my song Wasn't Expecting That, but as the saying goes, you're only as good as your last song, and my last song was fair to middling! I wonder, is it the same for photographers? Are you only as good as the last shot you took?
I've recently released my fifth album, 'The Years In Between' through Gingerbread Man Records which is Ed Sheeran's record label.

You've been shooting with the Lomo'Instant Automat, how have you been getting on with it?

I've been getting on great thanks, I really like it. I sometimes struggle with distances and focus but I think that's all part of the fun and the practice of it. Every image is unique and can't be messed with and I like that. It's like recording a song live in one take and releasing it into the world, which, in actuality, would be terrifying.

What did you choose to shoot?

So far I've been quite lucky in that I got the camera just before a little break away. So I got to go to Barcelona, Cadiz, Livornio and Monte Carlo. The weather was good which means you get all those beautiful deep European colours of the streets and sunsets. I like a lot of landscapes and odd juxtapositions.

What's coming up for you in the next few months?

I have a tour coming up in the highlands and islands of Scotland which I'm very much looking forward to. It's my first solo tour in about 5 years and I'm already equal parts excited and nervous. It'll be great to see some of the Scottish countryside. It's a truly beautiful place. I wrote some of the last album there so I'm looking forward to heading back and taking the camera along for the ride, capturing some of the stunning scenery and the wildlife. I'll also be promoting the latest song from the album which I wrote with the brilliant Turing Brakes called 'Where Have All The Good Vibrations Gone? They sing on the track too and we've recorded a special live acoustic version too which you can find on Youtube which is pretty cool. As well as all that I'm looking into next year, planning some new releases and also planning some other projects too. All very hush-hush at the moment, but all very cool.
