Around the World: Traveling with Beth Saravo

LA-based photographer Beth Saravo recently tested out our film while traveling in Korea, Japan, and Australia. Though she mostly works in the realm of music photography, Beth shows us more intimate moments of what exploring the world on tour is really like.

Hi Beth! Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Ahhh, this is tough! To the outside, I am just a photographer living in LA and traveling with musicians for work, but there’s so much more to me. I grew up in New England, went to college in New York, and moved to the west coast right after graduation. I have always had an itch to see the world, and one of my favorite places to explore is Japan. I am a board game connoisseur, chef for my friends, and I absolutely love small mammals and dogs.

How did you discover your passion for photography?

Growing up, I remember receiving a children's camcorder for Christmas, and obsessively making videos with my friends. One of us would write a script, the others would direct and act — we would even involve our parents and pets. This really began my passion for making media which turned as I got older into taking and editing photographs. As I got older, there were more relevant uses for this skill: from photos for the yearbook committee to senior portraits of my friends. The passion grew as I did, and it became part of my identity entering college where I promptly switched my major from Communications to Digital Media.

These photos were all shot on Lomography CN 800 35mm film. Tell us more about the subject matter you chose to photograph.

I’m able to travel for work, so I opted to shoot my Lomography CN 800 35mm film while abroad in Korea, Japan, and Australia. These locations warrant ‘different’ images in foreign places, as well as images of the musicians I travel with. I tend to shoot film less on the road because of the immediacy that digitals bring. This makes the moments I do choose to shoot on film intimate memories over the weeks I spent overseas. This also warrants quite random subject matter.

Pick a photo and tell us the story behind it.

The photos of the three sun conures is one of my favorites! I was in a bird enclosure at a conservation center on the Gold Coast and the three birds were playing on the woman’s head. The film really complimented their colors and I love how this image came out.

What advice would you give to aspiring photographers?

Some overall advice would be to hone in on the type of work that fulfills you —whether that portraiture, music, fashion, or commercial work. Of course, jobs will come and go, but if you allow yourself to grow within your field, you will become lightyears better than being mediocre at lots of different things! This doesn’t mean to say no to new things, but have a concentration that you are known for!

What can we expect to see from you in the future?

You’ll hopefully see a ton more film. I really enjoy it and have been delving into which cameras get me the look I enjoy. I also want to keep working with artists/musicians. Every time I’m able to delve into the life of a musician I capture intimate portraits that mean a lot to me. There’s something special about the moments you get one-on-one traveling with someone.
