Here at Lomography, we just love working with crazy-talented and spirited hearts. That is why it's no surprise that we loved the work of Singaporean artist Nur Aida Sa'ad, the chief magic maker behind Yellow Mushmellow.
She has such an inspired way of looking at the world and in turn, adds a bit of her own blend of magic to it with her witty and playful illustrations. We got in touch with her to work on a collab project and we're happy to share with you her concept art for the Lomo'Instant Automat!
Hi, Aida and welcome to the Magazine! Please tell us about yourself.
Hello! Iʼm Aida, also known as Yellow Mushmellow. I work in advertising in my day job but do a bunch of nonsense on the side and pretend itʼs art. Creating stuff for leisure after a full day of creating stuff at work is like eating desserts after a meal: the best part!
How did you start your career as an illustrator?
By accident. Iʼve always had an interest in drawing, but have never taken it up seriously until university. It started pretty unintentionally — when I was doing my A-Levels, I spent my extra time during exams drawing on the margins of my papers. I realized that those silly stick-man doodles gave me a larger sense of accomplishment than doing well for the exams did, and that was when I decided to submit my amateur exam-paper drawings in an application to NTUʼs School of Art, Design, and Media (ADM).
How would you describe your work?
My work involves making comics, illustrations, merchandise, art installations, murals, and bad jokes. I guess I like telling stories regardless of the medium theyʼre told in. Thereʼs a whole lot of magic in telling stories — it creates room for conversations and invites you to explore new points-of-view. Being playful with how you see the world makes life so more exciting.
What inspires you?
I believe in seeing magic in everyday things, so I draw inspiration from my personal life and everyday observations. My biggest inspiration would be my two special needs sisters, who teach me to look at the world with fresh eyes. The way they interpret life in their own unique ways is the essence of “thinking outside the box,” and reminds me of the kind of wild spontaneity and imagination that beats at the heart of creativity.
What are your first impressions on the Lomo'Instant?
1. Wow, this looks so cool!
2. Will this make me look cool too?
But for real — I got myself a whole bunch of Instax films upon getting hold of the LomoʼInstant and immediately brought it out to play. I like that it has formulaic presets but at the same time, the outcomes are super unpredictable, which creates room for lots of play and experimentation. Peep some fun shots I took!
Please talk us through this design you made for the Lomo'Instant. What's the concept behind it?
I wanted to skin the camera in something bright and cheery to capture the essence of the play. With a camera in hand, suddenly everything around you becomes an interesting object to be photographed — from the flowers on the sidewalk to the shape of its shadows. There is a lot of fun in seeing the world through that lens.
Are there any upcoming projects that you would like to share? Please invite our readers.
Iʼm working on some exciting stuff now, but nothingʼs concrete yet. Feel free to follow my adventures on Instagram, @yellowmushmellow!
