A Camera Made of Film Cassettes, by Alireza Rostami

What do you do with all the film cassettes you've accumulated through the years? Researcher and photographer Alireza Rostami creatively used his collection in making the Unity Camera.

We asked Alireza to talk about this project. "All my life I've been taking many pictures with an analogue camera. I always kept the film cassettes, which remind me of my memories. Also, they always exude this character, so I found a way to reuse them. This art project converts waste into reusable material, which is good for nature."

Alireza made two cameras with his 35 mm film cassettes — a 4x5 camera with 120 film back and a medium format camera with roll film holder. As for its name, it's pretty straightforward — he was inspired by world peace and unity.

Making symbolic art amazes Alireza's friends. His other projects include a 3D wrist camera, a computer camera, a wrist flash, and a watch camera. This creativity started since childhood when his father introduced him to his collection of books, which led him to theater and writing. Eventually, he started writing plays and short stories, one of which was called "Champaign" — a story about a lonely photographer. To better understand the character, he bought a camera and started photography. And the rest is history!
