Photographers Unite: A Virtual Photography Conference by Image Salon

In those uncertain times, the only constant we have is each other. In that spirit, Image Salon, a photography and post-production studio in Montreal founded by photographers Davina + Daniel, decided to bring photographers together for PHOTOGRAPHERS UNITE a free virtual conference on May 26 and 27. Sharing tips, tricks, and experiences, more than 20 different photographers come together to celebrate their passion virtually with fellows as passionate as them.

"'Contribute to our community and better the world around us' has always been a part of our core values, and this whole pandemic has sprung us into action."

The conference is on a donation-based basis, and 100 percent of the proceeds will go to Global Giving, redistributing the funds to the Coronavirus Global Relief Fund, in addition to local funds in New York City, Italy, Syria, and the Philippines. We chatted with Daniel, one of the masterminds behind to give us a bit out of insight about his incredible initiative.

You just announced the online conference "Photographers Unite" for May 26th & 27th. Tell us a little bit about that event.

Photographers Unite is a virtual photography conference to raise money for charitable causes, related to the Covid-19 pandemic. By partnering with the platform Global Giving, the donations will be distributed to the Global Coronavirus Relief Fund, as well as local funds in New York City, Italy, Syria, and the Philippines. The marathon event will be held online, on May 26th and 27th 2020, and consists of back to back, short 20-min talks by 30 industry leaders from different genres, who are donating their time and expertise. Registration is completely free, and donations are optional. Sponsors are also invited free of charge, in exchange for help promoting the event. Altogether, this event is shaping up as the biggest gathering of industry leaders and attendees the photography community has ever seen.

What sparked the idea for "Photographers Unite" originally?

“Contribute to our community and better the world around us" has always been a part of our core values, and this whole pandemic has sprung us into action. We're fortunate to have connected with so many amazing photographers over the years, and bringing the core value together with our network was a match made in heaven!

What are you hoping to achieve with this project?

Our goal is to unite and reinforce the community of photographers and raise as much money as possible for charity. Photographers already make up such a strong community; I've always loved how you can run into another photographer, and you'll instantly have things to talk about. During a time of such division in parts of the world, we hope that we can all enjoy some love, kindness, and togetherness for a couple of days!

What does photography mean to you?

I grew up around photography, my father was a serious hobbyist, and got me my first camera when I was 12. He would take me out on the streets to shoot whatever or whoever inspired us. It's part of my DNA now, and something I couldn't live without. Photography allows me to capture visuals of the simplest of moments, that might otherwise be easily forgotten.

Where do you find inspiration in times like these?

We have two little kids at home (ages 6 and 3), and they bring us a lot of photo-ops every single day! We also live out in the country and have beautiful nature surrounding us, with beautiful sunsets, perfect lake reflection, and all of the makings for great photos. It's not too hard to stay inspired around here!

Finally, anything else you'd like to share with our Community?

I just want to send positive vibes to the entire community of photographers. Every day I read of postponements and cancellations, and I know that many of us are suffering right now. Sending love to each and every photographer out there!

The event will take place on Tuesday, May 26 and Wednesday, May 27. Head over the website to register or for the full schedule. Lomography will provide the attendees with a discount code for online purchases.
