Capturing the Memories: Mate Choi's New Petzval 55 mm Mark II Review

Hi, Mate Choi! Please introduce yourself to Lomographers.
Hi, I am Mate Choi from Youtube Mate Choi's Post IT channel, producing and uploading videos about cameras, photos, IT. Actually, I am also the producer of the Ripple Company which my Post IT channel is a part of.
How did you start photography?
Just like any others, I started photography from the people around me, that is my friends and my father. My dad always liked to take photos of migratory birds with Fuji S2PRO, and my friends in high school were all radio broadcast society members, and my role was to take videos and photos from then until now.
What does photography mean to you?
For me, photography is something that stops time and keeping things permanently. Photos preserve the contemporary that we are present in, that doesn't change in the future. I try to take photos as many as I can, and try my best to make my friends feel its story and sympathize together.
What is your favourite type of photography?
My favourite photography work is portrait pictures.
Characters grow up and grow old. It is an honour for me to take the pictures of the present. So I take a series of pictures of a moving person that syncs into the background.
What gears would you like to recommend to your subscribers?
If you take photos for fun and for memories, I would recommend Panasonic lx100m2. Its operation is fun, also with a viewfinder that is durable in a sunny weather. It also has its unique style of Leica – deep colors and outstanding resolution – I always bring it to travel or a date.
What do you think is the most important aspect of making videos?
I take 'story' as the most important element whenever I film. Unlike pictures, videos show the viewers as much information as I want, so I think it is most important to deliver my intention accurately by listing them out clearly. That is why all my videos distribute my conclusions every time so my audience finds out easily the information and the flow of the story.
What was your first impression on the New Petzval 55 mm f/1.7 MKII Lens?
Beautiful. It was my first impression. The design of the lens is so antique and classic, it could even be used as props. I like film cameras and especially how it portrays the vibe of film cameras even in digital cameras. Besides, the results are beautiful as well.
We can't miss out the bokeh effect of the New Petzval 55 mm f/1.7 MKII Lens! Do you have any tips on using its bokeh?
Depending on how you make use of it, the Petzval lens can be an effective device, or it can also produce meaningless results so the producing method is very important.
The most dramatic result was under the sunlight with a little shade in the backlight and a little bit of limelight. The Petzval lens stood out the most in that condition where the background was filled with leaves or things that creates disturbance.
What do you think is the most critical and the best part of the lens?
I think the critical part I'd point out is that it is susceptible to dust. I understand that it is inevitable from its design, but shooting environments are not always cooperative, it always has a risk of expose to dirt or moisture.
The best part is obviously how you can freely control the swirling bokeh effect and create the mood that other lenses can't produce!
What would be the feature that differentiates the New Petzval 55 mm f/1.7 MKII Lens to other lenses?
Probably that it is compatible with the full-frame mirrorless cameras, and also has become more convenient. But one thing I am quite sad about is that I use the Panasonic S-series, but L Mount is not available. Please release it quickly!
Who would you recommend the New Petzval 55 mm f/1.7 MKII Lens to?
I really want to recommend to people who are tired of the same old pictures and someone who wants to try the effect that others would be jealous about. If you upload pictures on Instagram taken with this lens, you will receive a lot of messages, haha.
Is there any Lomography products you want to use?
I want to try using Lomo LC-A, Lomo Lubitel, Lomo Instant Square Glass, Lomography Experimental Lens Kit. Especially I really want to try the Lubitel and ¾ Lens kit.
Do you have any plans or next goals?
I want to record and upload videos that are meaningful and everyone would want to follow taking. I think the last Picture Realization Project video was just like I said. But my girlfriend is not painting for me so I cannot start the second part yet...
Lastly, is there anything you want to say to your subscribers?
I am just thankful to people just by watching my videos. I will continue seeing you by producing better work!
