Elegance and Roughness: Ncarl's Portraits in Black and White
4 19 Share TweetEven against plain and simple backgrounds, black and white photography looks exquisite when you know how to play with light. French Lomographer ncarl does just that as they use light, both natural and artificial, to create these stunning portraits.
When done right and with enough creativity, black and white can be timeless. Ncarl’s series modifies the classic silver look in portraiture with richer contrasts of black and white by manipulating light and shadow; sculpting and even decorating the silhouettes and features of their subjects.
At some point, they also use a light pen or stick to draw scribbles on the subject. These wayward lines and strokes of light deliver intrigue out of the simple. Some subjects also posed as if they are the ones creating and controlling light. These little turbulent details also seem to add more roughness and playful mischief to the fine-grained silver compositions, making them more textured overall.
