Vintage Camera Hut’s London Photowalk with the LomoChrome Metropolis

Lomography teamed up with Vintage Camera Hut for a special London-based photowalk using some rolls of the LomoChrome Metropolis film. In this article, we shared some of the photos taken on the day and talked to Marius Constantin, the founder of Vintage Camera Hut.

Hello Marius, please tell us a bit about yourself?

My name is Marius Constantin, I'm 32 years old and I'm originally from Romania. I've been living in London for the past 8 years. I started shooting on film in 2016, from curiosity. My first film camera was an Olympus OM10 which is still my favourite camera. This is the reason why all the students at Vintage Camera Hut Film School are learning with this camera.

What made me decide to set up Vintage Camera Hut?

I started to buy and work on film cameras in 2017. So when I started VCH in 2019 I already had some cameras which I managed to repair and it was more like a fun thing to do rather than a business.

What kind of significant changes have you noticed in the film photography community over the past few years?

The film community has changed a lot. There are so many people going back to film now. I had a stall in Brick Lane ever since June 2019 and I've seen and talked to thousands. In 2019 most of the people were very young 16-24, in 2021 you can see many people over 30 to 40 carrying film cameras. Also, people started to realise the real value of the film. It's not just a cool thing to do anymore. They really want to put some value on their photos and print them, store them in albums. The Film School is an idea I had in late 2019 and it came from the fact that so many people were asking about how to use the cameras and had so many questions about film photography. I was planning to start the school in 2020 but Covid happened.

Tell us about this Photowalk (location, attendance weather, anything) and how did you all get one shooting with the LomoChrome Metropolis.

I started it with my friend Chris, who is an amazing photographer. For now, the course is designed for beginners. We will have one every month with a maximum of 10 students. The course starts in a location next to Waterloo Station with 2 hours of theory and then we're going out for another 2-3 hours to practice what we've learned in the first part.

What's coming up next?

Next year we will have another course for people who want to go a bit more in-depth with film and maybe add some darkroom learning sessions. The last photo walk we shot with Lomo Metropolis and we got some amazing results from all of the students, but 2 of them were really, really good. It was the perfect film for the cloudy weather as we could shoot it at 400 ISO. We have a lot planned for 2022 at Vintage Camera Hut, many amazing collaborations, new products to come, a wider range of cameras and a wider range of accessories.

We also talked to Jan Laux, one of the participants of the walk, about his experiences of the Photowalk. He said:

"Before attending the Vintage Camera hut workshop had no previous experience with film photography, apart from being intrigued by it for a while. Actually, I did not have any photography experience whatsoever besides taking photos on my phone. I found the Vintage Camera hut workshop in an advertisement on Instagram, and due to my general interest in film photography, I figured that I would like to give it a try."

We also asked him about how he got on shooting with the Metropolis film and if he liked the results, and he answered:

"I personally really enjoyed it, and I am very happy with the results. I like the colour scheme and feel like this film is very well suited for street photography. However, I´m also very keen to try it in a less urban environment than central London, and I´m sure the results will be great, too."
