A Gallery of Firsts: The First of the Roll

A new year calls for a new roll of film. When we load up a fresh roll, usually a half of the first exposure is already exposed. Some photographers entirely neglect the first shot, while many would still use the remaining space and treat it as a canvas. Here are some of our favorite photographs from the Lomography Community that were creatively and resourceful composed on the first of the roll.

An Easy Half-Frame

Half-exposed? No problem. The unexposed half of the first roll can still lead up to interesting and artful compositions, and these easy half-frames look just as delectable on full-frame. Our motto, don't think, just shoot really comes to mind here. Just let yourself go, and treat the first frame just like any other exposure!

Paneled Portraits

We usually expect that a portrait must be presented in the full vertical frame, but some halved portraits make for more intriguing cases. Strong light burns around the edges can add an extra flair to these compositions: a sense of mystery and ephemerality on these faces.

A Kind of Burning

One of our favorite aesthetics on film is light leaks bleeding into the exposure. The first roll always gets this treatment -- mostly coming out as white as paper, while other times in blends of yellows, oranges and reds. The ranging warmth of these photographs look like they were being swallowed up in flames.

The Spectator's Shot

Here's a composition tipster to turn your first of the roll extra special. Frame your subject or scene like an observer peeking from a corner. The blank spaces that make up these frames remind us of window panes, door frames, posts, and other structures where the spectator hides.
