By day, Vianditya Dewanata is a professional animator and illustrator for TV and movie production. By night, he is a talented film photographer wandering the streets of his home in Vancouver, Canada. Using his love of watching films and artistic eye for film production, Vian easily puts a dark, moody, and cinematic feel to his photographs. Each photo feels like a scene grabbed from a movie, and we are left wondering the stories behind it.

He shares with us his Lomography Color Negative 800 shots taken on his Hasselblad 500CM and Leica M2. Learn more about him below!

Hello Vianditya, welcome to Lomography! Can you please introduce yourself?

Hello, you can call me Vian. I currently live in Vancouver, Canada. I’m a professional animator and illustrator for TV and movie production. I studied fine art in university where I studied different kinds of art media including photography.

How did your analogue journey begin for you? What does film mean to you?

In the last 3 years, I found myself exploring photography to express myself. The process of taking, developing, and scanning/printing the pictures makes me appreciate the memories more than just taking them. Film photography allows me to just slow down and enjoy the process of recording memories.

These photos feel like they bring us into a movie set or a different world even. How would you describe your style of photography?

If you can feel anything from my photographs, to me that’s an achievement. I honestly can’t describe what my style is, I just make them the way I like to see them. But I have to admit I love watching movies so they do have a big influence on my work.

Who or what inspires your work?

There are so many photographers that inspire me, but I remember I wanted to take my camera and take pictures when I saw Ernst Haas’s work.

What is the story behind this series?

Just ordinary places that I think can look beautiful when shot at the right time and at certain angles.

You took these on Lomography 800, what are your thoughts on the film?

It's surprisingly really good. It gets the look that I like—very versatile for night photography but can also be used for portraits, and of course affordable.

Is there anything you’d like to experiment within your creative process?

I did try different things before and I’d love to try more things but I haven’t decided and just let things flow so that I could enjoy the process naturally.

How else do you like to spend your time?

In general, I like to spend more time with my family and doing my personal work.

Lastly, what’s one thing you’re looking forward to in the new year?

To be more healthy, productive, and travel more (hopefully!)
