A Kaleidoscopic Eye with Erin Veness

UK-based photographer Erin Veness recognizes the uniqueness of shooting with film and each frame is carefully thought out. Her latest portraits were taken using Lomography Color Negative 35 mm film ISO 800 and 400 with some crazy kaleidoscope effects added. We talked to Erin about her latest work and where she developed her love for film.

Hello Erin, tell us a bit about yourself?

I'm Erin, 33 and based in Hastings working in Brighton and London mainly. I have a large collection of cameras and two cats.

How did you get into shooting film photography and why do you choose to shoot in film?

I got into film photography back when I was 16 and at college. We had a whole module on photography from shooting through to developing and then printing images in the darkroom. I got to share these newfound skills with my maternal grandfather, and he gifted me the camera I still predominantly use. I shoot film because it encourages me to slow down, I consider the model, the pose, the angles and lighting so much more. Each shot feels a bit more considered and precious.

How would you describe your photography style?

I'd describe my photography style as experimental. I love using different film stocks and different cameras. Love a special effects filter and what I can do in-camera.

Where do you want to go with your photography? Do you see it as a hobby or something more career-based?

Currently, my photography is a hobby come side hustle, but eventually, I'd like to make it career-based if possible.

You use a lot of Lomography films in your work, what do you shoot with, and which are your favourites?

I mostly use my Praktica MTL 50 with some Lomography Color Negative ISO 400 film. But I am also a big fan of the ISO 800. My absolute favourite to experiment with is the LomoChrome Metropolis. Due to the difficult weather in the UK, if I can shoot it at 400 I'm sold.

One piece of advice for future film photography shooters?

Experiment and have fun with it!
