Ryan Kemp's Street Photography on LomoChrome Purple 2021 Pétillant Film

We recently sent our LomoAmigo Ryan Kemp a roll of our newly formulated LomoChrome Purple 2021 Pétillant film to test out. Let's take a look at the Pittsburgh-based photographer's moody street photography, first impressions, and all the tips and tricks he has in regards to shooting the color-shifting film.

Hello Ryan, could you tell us about yourself and your work?

My name is Ryan Kemp from Pittsburgh, PA. I discovered film photography 12-13 years ago with the Lomo Fisheye and Diana F+ when I needed it the most— I had just gotten out of rehab for a drug and alcohol problem, and I desperately needed a creative outlet. Film photography was pure magic to me and I became obsessed immediately. It literally saved my life. I've shot anything and everything over the years, from landscapes to street to portraits, but I am probably most known for my dark, dreamy, grainy photographs of foggy scenes.

Could you share your experience using the LomoChrome Purple 2021 Pétillant film? How was it compared to shooting other regular Color Negative films?

The dreamy color shifts are unlike any other color negative or positive film. I shot it similar to any other color negative film, but I made sure to not overexpose it because I wanted to capture rich, vibrant colors.

Did you experiment with the extended ISO range of this film?

I shot most of the photos at 200 or 400 ISO.

How did you come up with your subjects and settings with the color shift in the film in mind?

I've shot enough LomoChrome Purple over the years to know which colors yield which color change, so I kept that in mind, but also be true to my general style of photography and what captured my interest. I would love to shoot this film on a dark, foggy morning as well.

Is your process of shooting with LomoChrome Purple any different than your process of shooting with regular color negative or black and white film?

My process is basically the same except I make sure to not overexpose the film because I want to capture deep, rich colors.

Is there a specific picture that you like most from this test roll? Can you explain why?

I love the shots of the radio tower on top of the hill with fog surrounding it. I love the mood and dreaminess of it.

If you could sum up your Purple experience in three words, what would they be?

Bold! Colorful! Magic!

How do you like this formula compared to the previous LomoChrome Purple film?

I've shot a lot of Purple over the years, in both 35 mm and medium format. The colors are much punchier and richer with this formula, which I love.

There are some dots, which is a characteristic of the new formula, on some of your shots. How do you feel about those?

I love grain and any "imperfections" with film, so I don't mind at all. It only adds character.

If you were to shoot another roll of LomoChrome Purple 2021 Pétillant, would you do anything different?

I would definitely save it for a very dark, foggy morning. I would LOVE to see how those would turn out.

Any advice you’d like to share with future LomoChrome Purple users?
