The World Upside Down: A Creative Use Of LomoChrome Turquoise

4

Inspiration can come in many forms. We recently finished binging the popular TV show Stranger Things. Inspired by the upside down world, we decided to grab a roll of 2021 LomoChrome Turquoise 35 mm ISO 100–400 and let our creativity run wild.

We imagined a post-apocalyptic world, the sky turned yellow from the fumes of polluted air, and the ground blue, perhaps due to an oil spill soaking the soil. The pollution has eaten away our land and only a few survived this catastrophe.

One idea led to another and the new LomoChrome Turquoise suited our purpose perfectly. As a location, we ventured around fields that could serve our story. We wanted a mix of nature and urban landscape that could be a post-apocalyptic setting. The right mix of corn fields and anything that would shift colors. Lucky enough we ended up finding the perfect stage for our story to unfold.

For the clothing choice, we kept in mind how the LomoChrome Turquoise works. We selected a few items that could play well within the color shift. Blue turns yellow and yellow turns into blue, as well as red, shifting into a deep blue shade contrasted well in the picture.

LomoChrome Turquoise has a dramatic effect on skin tones. It is famously known for turning people into smurfs with bright blue skin. Lomographers have always been divided on this feature of the film. However, if employed with an idea in mind it can add a special touch not easy to achieve in any other way.

Another technical aspect of this film is that the color shifting works best on a sunny day. During this shooting the weather conditions were variable, and clouds were overcast in the sky. Nonetheless, we still managed to have some good sun rays gracing some of our shots.

Keep in mind the specific strengths and the weaknesses of your film stock when embracing more creative projects. It can be a fun process to learn how to work with the peculiarities in each of the LomoChrome family of films and use them to your advantage.
