Around the World in Analogue: Florence, Italy by Shannon Brigid

2

In our previous Around the World in Analogue feature of Florence, community member @lobeni13 talked about the exuberance of the one-of-a-kind city he deemed worth more than one visit.

Today, we see the same enchanting Florence through the lens of Tennessee-based film shutterbug Shannon Brigid. She visited Florence for the second time in September last year and took photos with a Minolta x-700 and the LomoChrome Metropolis. Let's dive into it!

This was my second time in Florence and my first time shooting LomoChrome Metropolis. It was the first stop of many in Italy this past September, 2022.

I walked for miles, only stopping to eat some of the best food I’ve ever tasted and to put new band aids on my feet. The city is achingly beautiful. I think LomoChrome Metropolis suited her well.

I spent the past year learning Italian and taking a couple of solo trips to Italy with my cameras. I started this trip in Florence and was finally able to converse a bit in Italian. It was so special being able to connect with people during this visit.

One night at dinner a waiter at the restaurant commented on the book I was reading. Having a chat about the book in Italian had me floating all the way back home. The people are so warm there.

Analogue lovers will love this! There are a handful of restored analogue photo booths tucked within Florence. They only cost €2 and produce gorgeous black and white strips! It was absolutely my favorite souvenir. I walked all over the city eating at all the restaurants I didn’t have time for during my first visit (Osteria Cinghiale Bianco is a must!)

I also visited the Galleria dell’Accademia where you can see David in all of his glory as well as Michelangelo’s Prisoners. It’s incredible seeing them emerging from the marble.

Reserve gallery tickets for the earliest morning time slots. You can maybe get a moment alone with Botticelli’s Venus this way—or whichever artwork is on the top of your list. Climb the Duomo just before sunset. Wear sneakers.

Buy a golden good luck charm on the Ponte Vecchio. Don’t skip aperitivo hour. And if you see the living statue busker near the Uffizi, toss him some euro and take his hand. You’ll see what I mean.

Many thanks to Shannon for sharing her stories and images with us! We wish her adventures in her third visit to Florence this year. To keep in touch, visit her LomoHome, Instagram and website
