Around the World in Analogue: Algeria

4

The largest country in Africa in terms of land area, Algeria is nestled between the Mediterranean coast in the North and the Sahara desert in the South.

For this edition of Around the World in Analogue, community member Stéphane Oukrid shares images taken during his visit to the country, specifically its second major city Oran, which is known for being a cultural, industrial and commercial center. He also went on a road trip in the mountainous and historical region of Kabylia where the indigenous Berber people reside. Let's hear his stories!

During the summer holidays I went to Algeria. With my brothers we decided to take on the road as a homage to Jack Kerouac's book On the Road. These pictures are like a travelogue from Kabylia to Oran, from East to West.

Kabylia is a Mountain region. But its particularity is that the mountains end in the Mediterranean Sea. Its inhabitants are the Berbers. They are called "Imazighen" which means "The Free Men". Our final destination was Oran. This town is called The Little Paris by the Algerians. But its nickname is "La Radieuse" which means "The Radiant". The town was founded in 903.

I shot with an SLR and some rolls of negative films. In this series from a Fuji Superia Reala 100 film we can see the mountain landscapes of Kabylia. But some are views of the town with people in the street we crossed to go to Oran. As a symbol, the end of the film is a sunset on the beach of Oran.

I really enjoyed the people and the nature. The inhabitants were so warm and open minded. And the landscape was incredible between mountains and sea. You can eat fresh fishes or fruits like fig, grape, watermelon or medlar during the summer that you can buy from sellers by the side of the road.

Algeria hasn't a real touristic policy. So if you want to visit it, you'll have to pay a Visa whatever the length of stay. For the Lomographers I advise to use a cooler bag for their rolls of film, because the temperature can go up to 45°C (113 F) in the North and 55°C (131 F) in the South during the summer.

@klawe indeed ! The Sahara desert covers more than 80% of the surface of Algeria, that is to say about two million km² (772205 square miles) !
