How to Replace the Lomo LC-A Sealing Foam

A lot of old Lomo LC-A cameras have lost the black foam which seals the roll compartment, so light could enter in the camera and fog your film. With this simple tutorial you’ll learn how to seal the compartment as new.

A couple of weeks ago I bought a Lomo LC-A made in 1986, by ebay. It was in a good working condition and it looked okay, but 25 years seems to be too many for the sealing foams. As you can see in the pictures, in my case a lot of foam pieces were lost, and the rest of them fell down with the minimum contact.

So I had to replace the foam, and I was thinking on it until I had an idea which I think it is the simplest way to fix it and also the cheapest one!

To make this repair you will need:

• A cutter
• A sharp scissors
• A cheap mouse pad
• A contact adhesive tube

1. With the cutter separate the mouse mat black foam from the plastic surface.

2. Cut two strips of this foam with an around size of 12 × 0,5 cms.

3. For the upper side of the lid you won’t need to touch up the strip. If it’s necessary, you can do it with the scissors, cutting out the strip until getting the right size. Add a little amount of glue on the foam strip and stick it on its place.

4. For the down side, you will need to adjust the foam strip size. It isn’t so easy than the last step, but it is not very complicated neither. Once, you have cut out the foam and adjusted the size until getting a strip which fits in its place, you only will need to add the glue and stick it in its place; for this step you can use the scissors or the cutter to help you to fit it well.

As you can see, the results are good enough and you won’t have to spent more than 15 minutes in the whole process.
