The Crescent in Downtown Birmingham

This photograph was taken from an overpass (with sidewalks) just west of the Birmingham Amtrak station. This pinhole photograph shows The Crescent (Amtrak) in the distance on the right stopped at the station and an NS freight on the left waiting to go east. The Amtrak passenger train is train 19, the southbound Crescent that runs from New York through Washington, D.C. and Atlanta, Georgia to New Orleans, Louisiana. This was shot just after noon. Train 20, the northbound Crescent, comes through Birmingham a few hours later. The concrete railing (seen in the bottom) served in place of a tripod for this one second exposure. This is a very busy railroad area. In addition to Amtrak, NS (Norfolk Southern) and CSX freight trains use these tracks. Seeing three trains at one time on adjacent tracks is not unusual. Birmingham, Alabama was created just after the U.S. Civil War by railroad and manufacturing interests. The area has deposits of iron ore, coal and limestone, making it an ideal location for iron production. Birmingham was created before industrial production of steel. This stretch of railroad was the center of Birmingham when it was formed. Scan of 120 Negative
