LomoGuru of the Week: trash-gordon-from-outerspace

12

He is a graphic designer from Kassel, Germany who has been a Community member for about a decade. His ten-year stay has been remarkably fruitful. Aside from honing his photography skills, it is in this Community of ours where he met his girlfriend, made a lot of friends, and helped organize a huge weekend meet-up for fellow lomographers. Say hello to Daniel Lauterbach, also known as trash-gordon-from-outer-space, our LomoGuru of the Week!

Name: Daniel Lauterbach
LomHome: trash-gordon-from-outer-space
Location: Kassel, Germany
Number of years as a Lomographer: 15
Number of years in the Community: No idea. About 10?

Tell us something about yourself. What are your main interests?

I am a graphic designer in an agency near Kassel. So I spend most of my day sitting in front of a computer screen. That’s why I constantly have a pain in my back which is really annoying.

In my spare time, I try to get my body moving. The sports I like most are longboarding and stand up paddling. They are both great because they train the whole body but are also very relaxing for the mind. These are a lot of fun, too. Just walking around, exploring the city, and taking photos is great as well.

I used to work at a theater which contributed to the big passion I have for theater and opera. I am also interested in art, design, and movies. I love going to concerts. I also enjoy travelling and cooking.

Tell us something about your LomoHome’s name. Why did you decide to have that username?

Trash-Gordon is a name that I got when I was still in school. My friends and I used to watch loads of trashy b movies during the weekends. One of my favorites was 1980’s “Flash Gordon.” We watched it over and over. I still love it. It’s a great movie. One day my best friend said to me: “Hey, why don’t you call yourself Trash-Gordon?” And so I did – online at least.

So Trash-Gordon was my original nickname on Lomography. When the new Community was introduced, I somehow messed up moving over to the new Lomohome and couldn’t register as Trash-Gordon anymore. I have to changed it to this awfully long version that I have now. If I could change it, I would go back to my original LomoHome name.

Share with us your most memorable experience in the Lomographic Community.

That would be the LomoWochenende 2014 (LomoWeekend 2014) which I helped organize together with frauspatzi, stellastellar, faaabii, and thegrump. It was a great opportunity to meet many lomographers in person. We spent the whole weekend together in Kassel where we had workshops, lomowalks, and a lot of fun. It was a great experience. I learned a lot and got to know so many cool people. That’s what Lomography is all about, isn’t it?

Have you actually met people in the Community that you now consider as close friends? If yes, name at least one of them.

Not only a close friend. Some years ago, this community actually introduced me to a young lady who is now my girlfriend. Thank you Lomography! It’s great having a partner who shares the same passion.

But I met friends, too. Last year stellastellar and I met nia_ffm for the first time. We were on a roundtrip to Southern Europe and nia_ffm waited for us at the bus terminal in Frankfurt to do a film swap. I took the roll with me and exposed it in Montenegro. It came out really great. Since then, we have met several times in Kassel and Frankfurt and she became a close friend of ours.

Do you think you’ll still be taking Lomographs in the next 5 years? Why?

Absolutely. Lomography has been a part of me for half of my life now. It led me to so many great places and introduced me to so many wonderful people. I don’t want to miss any of that. And I’m curious to see where it will take me next. One thing is for sure: the future is analogue.

What is your favorite Lomo camera and why? Do you have any memorable experiences using this camera?

Every camera I own is connected to very special memories. My favorite Lomo camera at the moment is my LC-Wide because it takes incredible photos and is reliable and handy at the same time. I have only had it for a few months so it’s still quite new to me. I am excited to take it with me on my next holiday trip.

Please share with us your favorite Lomographic shot and explain why you love that particular image.

It’s hard to pick just one but here is one shot that includes everything I love about lomography. It’s one of the results of the swap with nia_ffm. The colors from the cross-processed expired Agfa CT Precisa are amazing. And there are seacows swimming through the sky above Kotor. You simply cannot plan to make a picture like this. You could try and mock it using photoshop but only chance and coincidence can make it as perfect as it is.

Please share a Lomograph you wish you had taken and explain why.

This photo was taken by zorki in Porto, Portugal with a Horizon 202. Porto is a city I would really love to visit and the Horizon is a camera I have been wanting to have for a long time. This fantastic shot makes me want both even more. It’s perfect. I especially like the warm colors. There are so many reasons why I wish I had taken this picture but maybe it’s better that zorki took it.

What’s the best Lomographic or photography advice you think you have given?

I think stellastellar and I encouraged a few friends to try processing films themselves. It’s cool seeing them catching on with it.

If there’s one song or movie that best describes your Lomo life, which one is it and why?

Well, I think I am going to stick with Flash Gordon here. It’s basically an extremely colorful movie about discovering strange places in the universe where everything seems possible. Skies can be purple and pink and men can have giant wings. You can fly through the universe and just open the windows of your spaceship. The best part is: all the special effects are handmade. All this comes neatly packed with an extraordinary soundtrack. Sometimes when it’s just too dark to take a photo, a flash really can be the savior of the universe, don’t you think so?

Is there any advice you can give to new analogue shooters?

Don’t give up.
