LomoAmigos: Dutch Uncles

1

UK based Dutch Uncles released their fourth album titled “O Shudder” earlier this year. The band is composed of Pete Broadhead on guitar,
Andy Proudfoot on drums, Robin Richards on bass guitar, and Duncan Wallis on lead vocals and piano. They’ve been busy on tour and have been playing in various festivals around the UK, and documented these experiences with an LC-A camera.

Please introduce yourself to the readers of Lomography Magazine.

We’re a four-piece band from Manchester that started in 2008. We’ve released four albums, one of which was on a German label which some people seem to find quite exciting. We’re possibly the only band ever to have done a European support tour with Paramore AND get played on Steve Davis’ Interesting Alternative show on Phoenix FM.

What inspires you all to write music?

The boring answer would be our decision to make a career out of it. But writing in that way means that your constructing it with others to a timeline and applying themes to your work to make it successful which is sometimes the last kind of thing you want to write when you’re just bouncing musical ideas with yourself. In truth we’ve written so many songs now that it doesn’t feel like songwriting, which I think is a good thing because it distorts the process and then you end up surprising yourself which is the best feeling you can get from it.

What advice would you give to other budding musicians who want to make in in the music industry?

“If you’re good at something, never do it for free” The Joker

How was your experience shooting with the LC-A+?

Suitably awful for first timers as you can see, but we quickly grasped the idea of being perfectly still when taking a photo eventually. More than anything, it was really refreshing not to be able to look back at what you’d just taken, life becomes a lot more spontaneous when you’re not constantly reviewing it.

If your photos could have a soundtrack, what would it be? (5 songs, title and artist please)

Probably the music we listened to/heard/saw/danced/played over that particular weekend:

Black Belt – John Grant
Tastes Like Medicine – Menace Beach
Party Zlute/Learning to Love – LA Priest
Synth & Strings – Yomanda
Kiss From A Rose – Seal

Any future plans?
A European support tour with Garbage in November, will take some photos of it if you like.
