Live From Mixmag Lab: LomoAmigo Laurice Fox

Manhattan native Laurice Fox has turned her passion for arts, music, and events into an exciting career; she currently hosts the Mixmag Lab NYC, a weekly party streaming from the intimate bar next to their Brooklyn office. She's been using the Lomo'Instant Wide to photograph some of the best American and international DJs and was kind enough to share the portraits here along with her thoughts about the experience.

Please introduce yourself to the Lomography community.

Hi Lomo fam! My name is Laurice Fox and I grew up on the Lower East side of Manhattan, NYC. Since a child I've always had a passion for the arts: dance, drama, and visual. In college I was on the Concerts committee, responsible for bookings and marketing shows, which leads me to now--working in music, as the Partnerships Coordinator and Host of The Lab NYC at Mixmag US.

What is Mixmag all about? What is your role there?

Mixmag is all about international dance music and club culture. We're a media brand from the UK specializing in print, digital, and events and have been around since 1983, emerging from the acid rave scene! Having launched in the US in 2016, my role has been to help Mixmag grow it's US audience and strategic partnerships.

What is your relationship to photography? Have you used film before?

My parents both have a love for photography, so I grew up under their influence. I went to Brooklyn Friends High School where I took two years of photography: intro to black and white and dark room, and then digital and photoshop. Therefore, yes, have used film before and love love love shooting on it. When I travel I always bring a camera with me whether it's borrowing my dad's OM1 Olympus 35mm or my Nikon D5100. I could definitely be better about shooting with my camera more...like dragging it around with me...but....I'm not haha. And I need to add more content to my photo Tumblr, but it's called "Jamais Trop Loin," which means "Never too far..." in French (my second and learned language), which is a curation of photography from travels outside of NYC: jamaistroploin.tumblr.com.

How has shooting with the Lomo'Instant Wide changed your experience hosting artists in the Mixmag Lab NYC?

I get to interact with them on another level! I get to capture a literally instant moment of them behind the booth or direct them in front of one of the many awesome murals we have on the interior and exterior of our office. What I have loved about working at Mixmag is being able to connect with these super talented and revered musicians on a very natural and organic level because through work, they have become my peers. Having my Lomo for Polaroids, I've been able to engage with some of these artists in a really fun and creative way. Of course the ones who have a style and demeanor I'm attracted to are the ones who I'm most inspired to take a photo of!

Any tips and tricks you learned shooting along the way?

On the Lomo'Instant Wide--good lighting is key and definitely pay attention to the distance meter on the lens! I'm still figuring out the bulb long exposure setting, but I've made some beautiful accidents with it and some purposeful awesomeness too. That's what I love about film cameras--there's usually something unexpected and cool to take away. For manual shooting on film and digital cameras--study up on ISO, aperture, and shutter speed!
