The Daily Grind: Lomo'Instant Automat and Franz Navarrete

After testing the Petzval 85, Lomo Amigo Franz Navarrete is back to share instant snaps of his life taken with the Lomo'Instant Automat.

In this piece, Franz treats us with well-composed instants as a translation of his day to day life.

Welcome back to the digital pages of the Lomography magazine! Can you keep us up to date with your photography? Any new projects?

Besides my daily grind, I’m currently working on a personal portrait project and a photo postcard series featuring my travel snaps from Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh in India.

Tell us more about your journey as a photographer. How do you develop your skills?

I can say that my journey as a photographer is very unconventional. I had a short course in (film) photography when I was in university, forgot all about it after I graduated and only got reacquainted with photography a few years ago. I never got the chance to assist anyone and was mostly self-taught. I learned a lot from making mistakes. A lot of mistakes.

What/Who are the major influences in your work?

Travelling is my biggest source of inspiration. I am also inspired by great photographers such as Peter Lindbergh, Irving Penn and Alex Webb.

What is your philosophy as a photographer?

I am a very laidback person and I want to reflect that in my work too. My photography process is always simple and straightforward and I always aim to capture the beauty of a place or person as it is, imperfections and all.

Please tell us more about the concept of your shoot with the Lomo'Instant Automat.

I wanted the Lomo’Instant Automat to capture candid moments and behind the scenes snapshots from my vacation and photo shoots.

Any advice on how to fully utilize the Lomo'Instant Automat?

Don’t overthink about camera settings, just shoot, and most importantly, have fun! It is better to capture moments than miss them. Also, remember to share your prints with your subjects – it is always great and more memorable to give people something tangible.

Please give links to your website/social media accounts that we can go to if we want to stay updated on your work.
