Around the Campfire with Stephanie Buehler and the LomoApparat

You're going to want to get cozy for this Q&A, because here we are gathered around the campfire with Stephanie Buehler! She recently took our LomoApparat along on a road trip through Colorado and is now here to share a little bit about her first experience using the camera.

Hi Stephanie, welcome to Lomography Magazine! Can you start off by telling us a bit about yourself and your work?

Hi! I am a travel ultrasound tech, and I travel all over the states with my wife and three pups.

What made you decide to shoot with the LomoApparat?

I had seen a fellow film photographer's photos from the LomoApparat and really wanted to try it out.

What was your first impression of the LomoApparat?

I think it’s a cute point-and-shoot. It’s nice and light, which after lugging my SLR everywhere was a nice change.

Can you tell us a bit about what you shot with the camera?

I took the LomoApparat with me on a road trip through southwest Colorado. While we were camping in Ouray I thought it would be a fun time to document our evening. So you’ll see photos of my dog, our campfire and me with our lantern.

What was your favorite feature of the camera?

I love the gel filters. I’ve wanted to get creative with portraits and to have a whole light setup with gel filters, but that just isn’t in my budget. Not to mention how for my style of shooting, I like shooting as minimally as possible. And I get that with this pocket size camera.

Do you have a favorite shot?

My favorite shot is the portrait of me where I’m a few different colors and my face looks slightly distorted. I had this idea to use the Splitzer lens adapter, combined with the gel filters and flash, and multiple exposures to create a portrait of me with each quarter section being a different photo. The photo didn’t quite come out how I imagined, but I think I like the end result even better.

Who would you recommend the LomoApparat to?

The LomoApparat would be great for someone who wants to get into film because it’s a light weight point-and-shoot that has so many cool and creative functions.

If you could take the LomoApparat anywhere in the world, where would it be?

I would love to bring this camera with me to a fair or carnival. With all the fun lights, colors, textures, and people I think I would have a lot of fun with it. Plus I wouldn’t be worrying about carrying my larger, heavier expensive camera. I could just toss this in my bag and focus on having fun.
