Synesthesia #11 Love and Medium Format

2

For this 11th edition of Synesthesia, we decided to challenge ourselves with a theme for both the music and photos. As we continue showcasing our love for 120 format, we searched out photos showcasing powerful emotions in medium format. Furthermore, as we inch closer to Valentine’s Day, each song regardless of the genre, invokes feelings of love, loss, and everything in between. Let's dive into these detailed and breathtaking 120 photos and the emotionally charged tunes they are paired with.

This deeply mesmerizing and passionate shot by @lcpetrucci made us think of some of our favorite sweet and soulful love songs. The tenderness and raw emotion gets to you the more you gaze upon this photo. The three chosen songs perfectly encapsulate the feeling one gets from looking at the photo and being in love.

Sade - Love Is Stronger Than Pride
Donna Lewis - I Love You Always Forever (Curtis Vodka Balearic Remix)
Tamia - Officially Missing You (feat. Alex Spanador Mosely & Bruce Waynne) (Midi Mafia Mix aka Radio Main)

Despite its abstract nature, the strong reds and blurry nature of this Diana Pinhole shot with Lomography Color Negative ISO 100 reminds us of album covers that come from dream pop, new wave, and shoegaze artists. With these genres usually having themes of love, relationships, introspection, and heartbreak, music from Mazzy Star, The Cure, and Beach House make this a perfect relationship.

The Cure - Pictures Of You
Beach House - Better Times
Mazzy Star - Bells Ring

This portrait taken by @davidalexandre at first glance seems simple, but it clearly has a lot of love and thought put into it. Taking a portrait of a loved one, whether it's platonic or romantic, is not an easy task, but this picture is a great example of how to capture someone beautifully. Using the Lomo Lubitel 166+ and our Lady Grey ISO 400 film, this powerful image got us thinking of jazzier and more mellow love songs from around the world.

Stan Getz · João Gilberto · Astrud Gilberto · Antonio Carlos Jobim - Corcovado (Quiet Nights Of Quiet Stars)
Kimiko Kasai & Herbie Hancock - I Thought It Was You
Hajji Alejandro - Ako Pa Rin

Using the medium format version of our Color Negative ISO 800 film, Vietnamese Lomographer @acehz goes behind the scenes of a movie to capture this candid low lit photo. The colors of the film set remind us of other Asian films such as In The Mood For Love and Millennium Mambo. In terms of music, we first chose Troye Sivan’s Got Me Started, the music video for which was heavily influenced by similar aesthetics as well as the subject having strong main character energy. Furthermore, we chose two Canto Pop covers by Sandy Lam and Leslie Cheung, who have their spin on Berlin’s Take My Breath Away and Janet Jackson’s Miss You Much. Together, all these elements create a powerful image that captures the essence of longing.

Troye Sivan - Got Me Started
Sandy Lam - Ji Qing
Leslie Cheung - Miss You Much

This photo shot with the Lomo Lubitel 166 instantly reminded us of the music video of Roger Sanchez’ Another Chance. With the music video also playing with the motifs of hearts and love in a fast-paced city, this long-exposure shot could easily fit as a behind-the-scenes still in the music video. We paired up two other dancefloor tunes from Masters At Work and Daft Punk that usually help people find love on the dancefloor.

Roger Sanchez - Another Chance
Masters At Work featuring India 'To Be In Love
Daft Punk - Digital Love (Boris Dlugosch Remix)
