Electric Snaps and Magnetic Beats with Riot !n Magenta and the Lomo'Instant Automat

Hailing from Singapore, experimental electronica band Riot !n Magenta has come a long way from its humble beginnings. Members Eugenia Yip, Hayashida Ken, Ritz Ang, Khairyl Hashim, Sulaiman Supian, and Jean Ferry took the Lomo'Instant Automat to a gig in Bangkok and captured the electric energy that embodies their music.

Please introduce yourself to the Lomography community and the readers of the Online Magazine.

Ken: Hello, Lomo World! We are Riot !n Magenta, an experimental electronica band from Singapore.

How was the band formed? What is the origin story?

Eugenia: We met through a mutual friend and prepped a set for Baybeats Festival 2012. It worked out so we're still playing.

What/Who would you guys consider as the biggest influence in your music?

Eugenia: Both sides of the coin, and the entire piggy bank

What is the band's ultimate goal?

Ken: To stick together through thick and thin and stay happy always :)

Any notable stories while performing that you would like to share?

Ken: Opening for Chrvches was definitely a great boost and to have the crowd singing along to one of our songs was something we are really appreciative about.

Can you tell us a little more about your Lomo'Instant Automat experience? Any interesting things you encountered or challenges?

Jean: I really like the experimental and happenstance nature of the camera.

Sometimes you tend to want to overthink or plan things and be in "control" but relinquishing that and just exploring and experimenting can sometimes produce even better results. I think that's the beauty of the camera.

Please choose your favorite photo(s) taken with the Lomo'Instant Automat and tell us about the images, and why they’re your favorites.

Ken: We really like the ones taken at our gig in Bangkok. It reminds us of My Bloody Valentine's Loveless album cover whom we adore very much.

The other one we really like is the multiple exposures of Bangkok's city lights.

Jean: There were these LED lights on a building's facade and I thought why not try the multi-exposure and rotate the camera cause it was angular and boxy, the potential was there.

What was great was that the LED lights changed colour at the right time as I was rotating. I wasn't even paying attention to that when I was shooting so that was cool to see that in the outcome.

Any tips for first time shooters?

Ken: Don't overthink and just go with your instinct!

Any advice on how to fully utilize the Lomo'Instant Automat?

Ken: I really like the long exposure mode on the Automat!

Do you have ongoing or upcoming projects that you would like to tell the community about?

Ken: We are currently working on an album and we hope to get it out at the end of 2017.
