Renee Newman – On the Road with the LomoKino

1

From East Coast to West Coast, and even to Alaska, Renee Newman's photo diary takes us along on an exciting ride, documenting the fleeting moments of life on the open road. Since we last spoke with the New England-based photographer, she's remained open to experimentation, this time testing out our very own LomoKino.

The LomoKino shoots 4 images per single frame of film, which means that it's the only camera in our experimental collection that allows the creation of short analogue movies on 35 mm. While it has the ability to create motion pictures, Renee's use of the camera proves that the LomoKino's possibilities are not limited. The still images that result from it can turn a single moment into a striking quadriptych.

Let's take a look and hear from Renee about her first experience with this unique camera!

Can you tell us about what you shot with the LomoKino?

I was heading out on a cross country road trip, Massachusetts to Seattle, with plans to fly to Alaska afterward and I thought there couldn't be a more perfect moment to reach for the LomoKino. Reflected in the photos from this trip are our stops in Ohio, Minnesota, Montana, Seattle and then Alaska, and some small moments in-between. I did take a good amount of snaps from the passenger seat of the new views. I also wanted to try out the hot shoe feature in a most intentional way so I brought it to a show at the Sinclair in Cambridge, to cover Paper Lady and Kelsey Reck.

What was your first impression of the LomoKino?

Definitely slightly intimidated at first, I've never seen anything like this! But regardless I was ready and excited to experiment.

Do you have a favorite sequence shot with the LomoKino?

I want to say the coffee shop sequence right now is my favorite, it's one of the more cinematic feeling shots which I love. The story behind it is that I was having coffee with my Bestie one morning before work at a cafe. I was heading to get my film developed right after and needed to finish the roll, and the light was pouring in really nicely.

Do you have any tips or tricks for shooting with the LomoKino?

I think taking an intuitive approach at first was the right thing, for me at least. I carried it on my person everywhere for 14 days straight and shot whenever I felt inspired to. I felt like this was a good way to get to know the camera better in an organic, curious way. My biggest tip would be to take your time, as always when shooting fully manual it's important to consider all settings and metering when possible.

If you could take the LomoKino anywhere in the world, where would it be?

A place I'd like to take the LomoKino would be to the beach, probably somewhere in Rhode Island. I'm constantly shooting at the beach and I'd love to see what I could make in that setting. Though I do feel like a road trip was the perfect time for the LomoKino to shine, and it'll definitely be a must take on my future traveling endeavors.
