DigitaLIZA 35mm Scanning Mask: Absolutely Essential
4 5 Share TweetI have recently acquired the DigitaLIZA 135 scanning mask and I couldn’t be happier with it. Despite already having a 35mm scanning mask, the advantages of the DigitaLIZA make it essential if you want to scan your negatives. The DigitaLIZA mask is, simply, essential.
The scanner I have (Epson 1670) comes with a mask, but it presents many drawbacks that the DigitaLIZA solves:
- It doesn’t let you scan the sprocket holes. The mask hold the film firmly by the sprocket holes, preventing them from being scanned.
- It doesn’t let you scan panoramic images (let alone super-panoramics).
- Somewhat slow and complex when putting the negative into the mask. It is very flimsy and the negatives bend and deteriorate often.
With the DigitaLIZA 35mm, all these problems disappear and scanning negatives becomes a fantastic, comfortable and fast experience.
The operation of the DigitaLIZA is simple. We just have to put the mask on the metal plate and put the negative inside. Then we put on the cover (fitting the 4 indicators) and we close the mask completely. Lastly, we take off the cover and the plate. In this way, we obtain a negative perfectly fit inside the mask, that shows all its extension and allowing a complete scan of the film, including the sprocket holes. I should mention that the DigitaLIZA mask is compatible with all flatbed backlight scanners on the market, even though I recommend Epson because of their reliability and quality.
The scanning area is quite large (230 mm x 33 mm), which allows scanning of panoramic images. Also, the distance between the film and the scanner bed is just 1.2 mm, preventing the appearance of the annoying “Newton Rings”.
Without doubt, it’s one of the best investments you can make. The advantages of scanning your own negatives are many, specially that you have total control over the end results and the huge economical saving it entails. We also have to take into account that not all labs offer scanning service. Also, if you want to get the DigitaLIZA 135 and DigitaLIZA 120 pack, you will receive an important discount. You can also buy the DigitaLIZA in a pack with certain cameras, getting another considerable discount. Check out the saving packs at the Lomography Online Store
