Cherry Blossoms in Taichung

My only expedition to see the cherry blossoms this year took me to Dakeng, Taichung in Taiwan. We visited Taichung over the long weekend back in February and my friends decided to make the trip to a private plot of cherry trees that was kindly made public by the owner for the first time this year. There are other famous cherry blossoms viewing spots in Taiwan, for example: Yangminshan National Park, Wuling Farm and Alishan Forest but they are usually way too crowded during the peak of blooming.

I must admit that I was not terribly excited at the prospect because, really, Taiwanese cherry blossoms are a far cry from those in Japan or Korea. It didn’t help that the weather was awfully cold and rainy for central Taiwan during that particular weekend, making the 1.5-hour trek uphill really frustrating. However, if we did find out that it would take a 3km walk to reach the plots before we went there, we might not have made the trip!

I’m really grateful that we went ahead and that I packed Lomography CN 800 for the overcast weather, the place was definitely much darker than my photographs let on. Despite the bad weather and extra time we took to get there, the pretty pinks and greens were definitely worth it.
