US CitySlicker Noé: Lights of Los Angeles

For their first task, the US CitySlickers will show us around their towns and cities, documenting their experiences in analogue and telling us stories along the way. Now, let us join Noé as he takes us around town and introduce us to his side of Los Angeles!

Hello LomoAmigos, my name is Noé (no-eh), First time blogger, long-time Lomographer. For starters, I’ve been shooting for the most of these past 3 years. I just recently turned 21, a huge milestone for young people in the U.S. JP Westenskow (aka janisthewanis ) put it best in his interview for the Lubitel book (see question 9).

My occupation sounds funny, but that’s exactly what I do: plan and post a status or tweet for this small company (and I get to take photos at their events, too!) This, of course, requires that I be online a lot. A few days ago, while admiring The Great Satomi's recent work, I came across this CNN article comparing Los Angeles and New York. . . Well, as a community, we shouldn’t compare who’s city is “better,” but we should just share what makes our geographical location unique. As one of the Los Angeles City Slickers, I will try my best to show you a very unique view of the amazing city I call home.

When people tell me that Car is King in LA, I direct them to my LomoHome. Although I spend a fair amount of time in a car or on public transpiration, the photo ops are extraordinary!

One of my all-time favorite spots in LA is the corner of 5th and Hill Streets in Downtown LA. The juxtaposed Art Deco, Beaux Arts, and modern sky scrapers tell a story of LA’s Past and how it changed over the years. It is also at this intersection that I can prove you don’t need a car to have fun! Pershing Square begins at this corner; two blocks north is Angel’s Knoll and the historic Angel’s Flight Tram; two blocks east is historic Spring Street, the old financial district that is now Gallery Row; two blocks south is restaurant row, where you’ll find some of the most amazing restaurants and bars in LA; two blocks west is Grand Ave and the bottom of Bunker Hill. Climb a few steps (or take the escalators!) to reach the top and you’ll be nestled between some of the tallest skyscrapers and overlooking all the rest. I recommend this view during a sunset.

DID SOMEONE SAY SUNSET?! There is nothing that compares to a sun setting in LA. L’heur Bleu takes on a whole new meaning here.

And even after the sun sets, we still have the glow of Hollywood’s lights and the ghostly trails of Angelenos heading out or heading home.

The City of Angels is abundant in inspiration. There is absolutely no way I can speak of all its wonders in one article, just like there is absolutely no way of comparing this city to any other. All our cities and towns are unique and have their own charm. I’m just giving you a taste and telling there’s more to what meets the eye.
