LomoAmigo Wangs Lok Collects Memories with the Petzval 85 Art Lens

Hong Kong-based photographer Wangs Lok loves the outdoors. For his new set, he used Petzval 85 Art Lens with his Canon 6D to bring a piece of nature back into the city and enact his trailing thoughts.

About Wangs Lok: “I have to go out to nature every weekend to relax.”

On photography: “I think photography is a reflection of one’s views on different issues, subjects and people. Our daily lives and photography are inseparable because we capture different scenes with our eyes. We always think about the images we encounter, question and enjoy them in our heads. Because I am so passionate about the outdoors, most of of my work is about the relationship between humans and nature.”

On the theme of his new photos: “The inspiration is mostly from the bizarre dreams I had and the music I listened to, for example, a lonely cabin in an island or field or humans stood in the middle of the sea. These scenes just popped up in my head. This time it is ‘The Collector and Her Container.’ The idea is two different persons used the containers to collect their memories. It seems illusory but I just want to record the different scenes in my dreams.”

On his favorite photo: “The photo where girl hugs the glass bottle is my favourite. It looks as if she is protecting the things inside the bottle, at the same time defending some sort of enemies from the surroundings.”

The most important element in a good portrait: “The ability to reflect your inner thoughts.”

On his experience with the Petzval 85mm Art Lens: “Because it’s based on the old Petzval lens, the focusing is different from digital cameras todays. It takes time to get used to the focusing but it becomes easier when you practice more. The focus is in the middle of the image, so if you want to shoot film, it is more accurate to focus with split-image rangefinder cameras.”

Themes to try with the Petzval 85mm Art Lens: “I would love to take photos of the sea to express the chaos in mind through the ever-changing tidal waves and the swirly bokeh of the Petzval lens!
