Secret Life Of A Photographer: Jessica M. Kirk

2

Sometimes we forget that photographers are just humans with their own everyday routines. This time Jessica Kirk lets us into her world and reveals what's a typical day like in her life. We have had a pleasure of featuring Jessica's work and getting to know her from a different perspective in her recent interview for our magazine. Now you get to see a small part of her life behind the lens.

After arriving home in Sydney, my American friends McKenna and Ben came to visit me. It was their first time in Australia so I made sure to take them to all the spots – including Bondi Beach as it was the middle of Summer when they flew in. They got to hand feed Kangaroos, cuddle Koalas, try avo on toast, faced off with a Huntsman spider (Steve Irwin would have been proud), and here is McKenna outside the Sydney Opera House.

I’m taking up French lessons. My Swiss friend, Maude, sent me a recent copy of Le Monde to encourage me. I’m also trying taking up coffee again. It’s not going well. A lot of my life is spent at cafes with a drink, some pastry (if I’m lucky, a bagel), and my laptop. I’m involved in a lot of projects so I do a lot of work from the screen.

While I was living in Seattle the presidential race was heating up. Bernie Sanders came to town for a rally. Seattle is known as a staunch Democratic state, a very progressive one at that. Needless to say the rally was packed. There was a line from the stadium all the way to the Space Needle! I went with my friend Canh.

We got there early because we had a feeling it would be big. Once inside we waited five hours until Sanders took to the podium. He had done two other rallies that day. There was a lot of entertainment, performances, and warm ups for the audience before he came out. I went home humming in my head, “Bern baby, Bern.”

Self-portrait taken in Redfern, Sydney.

One of the roads in Washington, leading to a five hour switchback hike that I was about to embark on to the bottom of Lake Valhalla. These mountains and trees were to become synonymous with my life in Seattle.
