Fiona Burrage: Perfectly Imperfect with the Lomo'Instant Automat

Photographer and designer Fiona Burrage tested out the Lomo'Instant Automat with the Monochrome Instax film on her son Stanley who seemed to enjoy being in front of the camera.

Hello, Tell us a bit about yourself?

My name is Fiona Burrage. I’m a photographer and a mother. As a graphic design graduate, my professional work is very intentional, very considered, very deliberate. But I’d really like to loosen up and a be bit freer.

What did you choose to shoot?
After a busy 2017, we agreed we’d take more holidays. So just five days into 2018, we made the trip from Norfolk to Kent to stay in the beautifully bleak surrounds of Dungeness. Fortunately the school were happy with Stanley to take the week off, on the proviso we keep a journal of the week to show his classmates. During the week, both Stanley (4 & 3/4s) and I used the Lomo'Instant Automat camera. When the film came out, he thought it was just incredible. These images you see here are a collection taken by us both. We experimented with the bulb long exposure and multiple expose with varying degrees of success but that’s what makes these physical and tangible records so beautiful.

Our home for the week was the RIBA award-winning Shingle House, set back from the largest shingle beach in Europe. Perfect for beach combining. Our backdrop was the power station which looked filmic at night. I’ve just bought a couple of the monochrome instant film, as I’m going to do a black and white series on Stanley. He is my muse. Some of the photos will go in an album and others in photos frames.

How did you get on using the Lomo'Instant Automat?

I’ve loved using the camera – it’s now an essential part of my kit bag – to record those perfectly imperfect moments.
