Places to Go for Traveling Lomographers: Carhenge

Outside the city of Alliance, Nebraska is a strange sculpture that will drag you to the prehistoric monuments in Wiltshire, England. Carhenge is an art installation reminiscent of the Stonehenge, but there's more story to this interesting place.

Made out of vintage American automobiles, Carhenge was a project by Jim Reinders, who dedicated the installation as a memorial to his father in June 1987 summer solstice. Reinders lived in England to study the Stonehenge and its formation and structure so he can replicate it. Carhenge consists of 38 automobiles arranged in a circular form, about 96 ft. in diameter. There are three cars buried, with a sign written: 'Here lie three bones of foreign cars. They served our purpose while Detroit slept. Now Detroit is awake and America's great!'

Lomographer @juju_klick managed to take a detour for photographs using his Blackbird Fly 35mm camera and Diana F+ in taking pictures with 400 ISO films. Seeing such a strange artwork, it was definitely something photographers of any grind should take images of:

“These photos of mine were taken in Alliance, Nebraska — a very rural community. I was passing through by car, on my way to volunteer at some Native American reservations. It was late fall, I believe. There was so much good light! Who wouldn’t want to take pictures of the sculptures? The area was pretty isolated and to see these mammoth sculptures suddenly along the side of the road was too tempting!”

Anyone who comes across the Carhenge, whether intended or accidental, must take the opportunity to capture this eccentric panorama.
