Florian Poschenrieder's Superb Portraits with the Neptune Convertible Art Lens System

Munich-based photographer Florian Poschenrieder committed himself to photography more than a decade ago — a decelerated kind of photography! He recently tested the Neptune Convertible Art Lens system for us. In this interview he tells us about his impressions as well as a little bit about himself and his photography.

Welcome to the Lomography Magazine, Florian! Please tell us a little bit about yourself and your photographic background?

I am 29 years old and I have been a passionate photographer for 12 years now. I've been on the road for 6 years as a commissioned photographer, and I also work in a well-known Munich photo shop. You could say that I have completely dedicated myself to photography. I'm currently shooting with the Canon 5D MK IV, the Sony E syste, the Leica M, and more recently I also decided to use the Neptune Lens System.

How would you describe your photographic style?

That's a very interesting question! I would describe it as being decelerated but still spontaneous. A mix of retro and modern. For me, the decelerated style of photography has impacted me by working with my first Leica. At that time, I learned to take my time photographing and to think before I took a pictures. Somehow I cannot not get this habit out of my analogue veins anymore. And I do not really want that either! In the era of selfies and over 2 million uploaded photos per day on Flickr (really!) it is important to me to bring the true essence of photography to my viewers.

The mind-based process of composition and image formation plays a very important role, but also — for the sake of the craft — the reduction of the equipment to the essentials and the removal of automatics. All of this has influenced me and my style. Nowadays I believe that every photographer — whether a hobby photographer or a professional one — can benefit greatly from these things and will be able to improve his or her work because of that.

What other interests do you have besides photography?

Music and other forms of audio-visual design. For example, I also do some videos and enjoy to collaborate with other musicians and artists such as tattoo artists and tailors. Of course, all that flows back into my photography.

What was your first impression when you saw and used the Neptune Convertible Art Lenses?

A new, unconventional way to shape a lens system. I also had to think about the old Voigtländer Bessamatic system. All in all I liked the design of the Neptune Lens System very much.

How does the Neptune Convertible Art Lens System fit to your style?

Since I travel a lot and photograph a a great deal spontaneously, the size and weight of the lens system fits extremely well to my style of photography. After all, I do not want to lug myself dead, and such a small system with 3 different focal lengths is easily usable — even with my heavy DSLR!

Which focal length did you use the most?

I am a big fan of the 35 mm focal length, but this has always been due to the size. But I have to confess that I used all 3 lenses as much.

Tell us a little bit about your pictures.

Phew... what can I tell you about them... I often meet with friends after work and I like to capture spontaneous or spontaneous looking moments. Some moments just happen, others are staged at the actual place. Most of my models are photographers too, artists or other creative professionals. As a result, there is always a friendly exchange while I shoot. Very often beautiful shots are created like that.

Which photo do you like most?

Honestly, I can't tell you :-) As a photographer, I always have something to complain about, but at the same time I think all of them are good. So I usually let my audience decide which one is the best photo.

What tip do you have for first-time users?

If someone, like me, uses a variety of cameras, I would recommend to this person to opt for one lens mount system (e.g. for Nikon) and adapt this one for other mount systems (e.g. for Canon, Sony or Leica). This allows you to use all your lenses with as many cameras as possible — with analogue or digital ones.
