Collecting Moments and Feelings — an Interview with Alan Díaz

Much can be said about the photographer by taking a look at what they photograph. In the case of Alan Díaz, it's all about capturing things in their natural state and the feelings that come with them.

It's a "come as you are approach" and we're loving the honesty and intimacy of his shots. The images aren't altered or enhanced just for the sake of impact. They're shown that way because somehow, they reflect what Alan was feeling at that moment in time. And that's what makes them more beautiful.

Hello, Alan, and welcome to the Magazine! What do you do and what got you started with film photography?

I am a nurse, photographer, and co-founder of Élida C, a jewelry brand I created almost three years ago with my partner Marc Lago.

My first camera ever was a disposable one I bought for a trip to Mallorca when I was 15 years old. I was fascinated with the idea to capture a moment and a feeling (at that time there weren’t mobile phones with cameras). After that, I started to get more curious about film photography and my passion began.

What is your favorite thing about it?

That I never know what the result will be.

What makes you stay with film photography?

The thing that makes me continue with it is expired film. I love the creative results that you can get and that you can expect the unexpected.

How does it fit into your life and career as a creative?

Film photography is with me, in some way, in every moment. I love to discover new artists, buy photography books and of course, carry a camera with me.

Your feed looks like a carefully curated collection of memories and moments. Each photo is beautiful in its own way. How do you know when it's time to hit the shutter?

Intuition. Shooting with expired film made me understand that I have to trust myself more and be more confident with myself and my camera. I never think about the result, nor do I plan it. I just hit the shutter.

We love the serenity in your photographs. They really have that laid-back and peaceful vibe. Was this a particular style you were going for?

In some kind of way, I think that is a reflection of who I am and my personality.

How would you describe your photographic work?

A collection of moments and feelings in my everyday life that I want to perpetuate in time.

What do you wish to convey to your audience with your photographs?

I want to make people appreciate every little detail that surrounds us.

What inspires you to create art?

Nature.

What do you think life would be without photography?

It's pretty hard to imagine. But without a doubt, life without photography will be empty.

If you were to shoot with just one camera, lens, and film for the rest of your life, what would they be and why?

Since the first time I started shooting with Olympus XA, we became inseparable. I love the sharpness of its lens, the amazing design (Yoshihisa Maitani was a genius), and how tiny it is that I can keep it with me everywhere in my pocket.

What does a perfect day look like for Alan Díaz of All Tomorrow Parties?

Walking with Marc and my camera, on a foggy day across the forest and appreciating every little detail that surrounds us.
