Underwater Film Photography by Simone Carresi

Dreams of island getaways, with breathtaking sunsets, soft sand and refreshing waves, are often on many of our minds. And bringing your film camera along to immortalize the trip is a must. But have you ever thought about taking it a step further and capturing what lurks below the surface of the ocean? Simone Carresi takes us with him as we journey beneath the waves. Using a Nikonos V and a couple of black and white film rolls, Simone captures a world less often caught on film as he dives underwater.

The Nikonos V is the last model of the Nikon line of underwater cameras that is aptly titled as a play on the Greek island of Mykonos. First arriving during the 60s it was the next step after they made a waterproof casing for the Nikon S2 rangefinder. A seemingly indestructible camera due to its protective casings, earlier versions of the Nikonos were go-to cameras for documenting the American-Vietnam war as photojournalists traversed rough terrains.

Lomography has its own underwater offerings, including the Simple Use Underwater Case allowing you to safely take your Simple Use Cameras to up to 10m underwater. For those owners of the Lomo LC-A+ or Lomo LC-Wide, the Lomo Krab Underwater Housing lets you take your favorite go-to camera underwater to capture the mysteries of the deep blue sea.

Using black and white for underwater photography is an interesting choice. Though losing the vibrancy of the colors of sea creatures and fauna, the photos become more magical and surreal. It’s as if you are really transported to a whole new dimension. As the blueish waters disappear, to be replaced by shades of grey, as a viewer you get to focus more on the highlights and shadows of creatures, plants and rocks. The sea is a mysterious place and the use of black and white film for underwater photography adds to the sense of how much we don't know about what lies beneath the waves.

Simone's pictures are inspiring as for many, capturing underwater life is something more common with digital devices. With his photography, Simone proves that analogue is just as capable of capturing the wonders and mysteries of the ocean. With both secondhand cameras and new products available, underwater film photography is a great activity the community can discover this summer.
