Around the World in Analogue: Brazil

We've previously featured Rio de Janeiro in Brazil in the Around the World in Analogue series. In this edition, we're taking a trip back to the iconic metropolis through photos taken and shared by Chile-based Literature professor and community member Macarena Mallea (@ememallea).

I’m a professor of literature in Santiago, Chile. My father gave me a Diana F+ as a present when I finished my university formation in literature, in 2013. Then I started to go out with my Diana F+ to the streets of Santiago and improvise in analogue photography. I made a lot of mistakes and also learned a lot. All that experience helped me to form a more conscious method of shooting.

I always had a fascination with Brazil. I had an idea of the nature, the architecture and the ways of life of Brazilian society. So, all these factors prompted me to visit Brazil on different occasions: the first time in 2018, then the following year and finally now, in 2023, when I stayed for a month living in Rio de Janeiro, in the Botafogo neighborhood.

I learned a lot about their culture, I got into the landscapes and I made great friends. Of course, I was also able to take many analogue photos that made up the Brazilian Postcards folder, published on my LomoHome.

Brazil has a natural wealth incomparable to other places in Latin America. But what I enjoy the most is talking to the people, getting to know their stories and ways of life. I admire the way of enjoying public spaces, the coffee culture, a good day swimming in the sea, its gastronomy and its joy.

In Rio de Janeiro, I recommend visiting the beaches of Copacabana and Barra da Tijuca; climb the Pão de Açúcar and the Cristo Redentor.

I also recommend crossing to Niterói, a city facing Rio de Janeiro, crossing the Guanabara Bay by boat.

There it is possible to visit the Museum of Modern Art, built by the architect Oscar Niemeyer, who was also one of the designers of the capital city, Brasília.

Also, I recommend going to Ilha Grande, it is really a pleasure to leave the continent and find landscapes that have not yet been intervened with by the human hand. There you can see animals in their natural state, mainly monkeys.

Regarding photography, I recommend using a small and easy-to-handle camera so that you can take photos quickly. Fortunately the weather helps a lot to achieve good colors. One of my favorite films to use for capturing landscapes is Lomography Color Negative 400 35 mm, as it allows for very beautiful and magical colors.
