Baptiste From EMGK Photographie Tests Out Our LomoChrome Color '92 Film

Baptiste is a professional film photographer based in Lille. Today, he joins us to discuss the photos he took with his very first roll of LomoChrome Color '92 film, which he shot during a sunny day he spent in Namur, wandering through the city and immersing himself in its festive and lively atmosphere. The result is a series of photos tinged with nostalgia, energized by the vibrancy of blue, red and yellow tones that stand out against a set of generally soft and muted colors.

Hi Baptiste, could you tell us why you chose this setting to shoot the LomoChrome Color '92?

I had to do a photo shoot for a wedding in Namur, and since it's a city I've never visited, I chose to take the LomoChrome Color '92 with me to explore it. There was also a street festival that day, so tons of people were in the streets and I saw many somewhat atypical artistic performances. I especially wanted to see how the colors would translate on the film, and a sunny day seemed perfect to me for a first impression!

What camera did you use to shoot it?

I used my Canon A1 with its 50 mm f/1.4 lens for the whole roll. I just got that camera back from the repair shop and I was eager to shoot with it again.

What did you think of the look of this film?

I was somewhat surprised by the aesthetic of this film. It doesn't transform the colors nearly as much as the other LomoChrome films, but there's still something special in the overall look of the images. The photos exude nostalgia, and the tones are a bit desaturated, but some colors, like red and blue, remain quite vibrant regardless. The pictures of the docks look truly amazing!

Do you have a favorite photo taken with this film?

I think it's the photo of the couple walking their dog on the dock. I really like the atmosphere, and the details that tell this little story: the intertwined hands, the dog prancing around before them, the setting of the quays... I was just coming out of a wedding, and I guess a bit of that romantic atmosphere was still with me when I started shooting the Color '92!

What did you like most about the LomoChrome Color '92 film?

The colorimetric shifts are quite surprising! I liked the way it brought out the colder tones, especially the blue and green tones. I would have to shoot a few more rolls to fully tame it though!

In what context do you recommend shooting it?

I think it's a film that could be well suited to modern architectural photography. In my series, I really liked the way it rendered the metallic structures, with its cold tones. For all the photographers looking for a slightly desaturated look with deep blue tones, this is the perfect film!

How do you feel about a new color negative film being on the market?

It's always good news when new films are released, especially color negatives, given that the supply is scarce (and expensive!) Giving more choices to photographers is obviously a good thing, and the arrival of a new film means that the market is still healthy!

Do you have any memory from the 90s you'd like to share?

I wasn't that old in the late 90s! But that's when I took my first photos, on vacation or during school trips, with disposable cameras that my parents bought me and my sister, always giving us this instruction: "Don't use it like a toy, development is expensive!" It's still at the back of my mind whenever I shoot I think!

I hope to keep testing new films and cameras on my YouTube channel, and giving tips and advice to all the people who want to take up film photography!
