Lomography CN 800 (120) : The 'No Matter What!' Film

16

When I bought my Lubitel, I knew I was finally going to be able to have fun experimenting with different apertures and depths of field. So i decided to buy along with the Lubitel a box of 3 rolls of 120 Lomography CN 800iso. After shooting the 3 rolls, I came to the conclusion that this film give excellent results NO MATTER WHAT are the light conditions !

These 3 rolls accompanied me during my one month summer vacation in the south of France. And I tried to do my best to shoot them with the widest range of lighting possibilities. From a clear blue sky and über sunny day; to greyish and white light skies; to shots that are entirely in the shade; to night shots with and without flash; to backlighting shots; to dusk and dawn shots !

Leaving Paris polluted and grey sky (polluted compared to the south of france), waiting for my train, everything that is white will probably be over-exposed, maybe even burnt, but the contrast with the rest is simply great ! Dark areas don’t get grainy and keep their colours.
It is a film that will burn easily when shot with long exposure settings, anything that’s bright, under 1/30sec will surely come out burnt. But you keep great details on the rest.
Even shots taken with no direct light, you still keep great colors and focus. This is where i believe the graininess of the film is the most perceptible.
Now on the other hand, with good aperture and speed settings, on a bright and sunny day, this film is outstanding on the entire color spectrum. Thanks to it’s high sensitivity, you can use small aperture settings allowing you to have shots with a huge depth of field ! Plus you can be sure that your shots will come out mostly well focused at 1/125sec even if you move your camera around while snapping away !
Here are some night shots, one with flash, two others just using a slower shutter speed and B setting.
These with the Diana Flash with a orange color gel with a 1/125 shutter speed
I also tried taking fireworks with the B setting, but was on a the deck of a boat, hard to not move around… I still enjoy the results =)
These were my first backlighting shots and I’m pretty happy on how the photos came out =)
But this is what I like most with this film, how the colors come out on low light exposures, morning and evening, dusk and dawn !

So to conclude, the Lomography ColorNegative 120 (800iso) film is an excellent film to shoot and experiment different settings on a camera that allows it ! And I also believe that this film will also look great in a camera such as a Diana or Holga… for the next review maybe ;)

Thanks for reading lomo-fellows and remember that lomo means HAVE FUN =)

Good review, wonderful gallery!! I like this film. The colour saturation is good and gradient is smooth, better than the cheap stuff I usually shoot.
