Richmond takes amazing portraits and so when we paired the Petzval Lens with Richmond we anticipated a match made in photo heaven.

We asked Richmond to tell us about his Petzval experience, to which he replied...

In the age of digital photography, with most photographers using mainly the same cameras and lenses, to achieve a personal look and feel we often depend heavily on post-production. So it is quite refreshing to test out the Petzval, a lens that gives a unique bokeh to your images off camera. I have never been a big fan of equipment that has too much of a 'look', like the fisheye lens or the star filter. Unless it's appropriate, I find it gimmicky. It's lazy. The Petzval could become that if you rely too much on the differently shaped aperture plates. Heart-shaped bokeh is just not my thing. But the Petzval is subtle, and with its 85mm focal length and fast F2.2 aperture, it is great as a portrait lens and should be considered a serious photographic tool. Over the few days I worked with the Petzval, it's been a joy to use. I mainly photograph people a free hand, so perhaps that contributes to the softness of my images. But I like that about the Petzval, it's not tack-sharp, it's not perfect. I like imperfection, it's much more interesting, it's liberating. It's life.
