Aubrey Rose Rewinds Time with Lomography Cameras

2

We were first introduced to experimental photographer Aubrey Rose through her otherworldly landscapes captured on Lomography 110 films. Her style immediately caught our eye—every photo made us wonder, which planet did she travel to?

She's back to share with us a peek into her travel memories, and this time not just through stills. Using our ActionSampler Camera, Aubrey pieced together several four sequentially-framed photos resulting in nostalgic stop-motion-like videos. She also shot her iconic 110 style using our Diana Baby and Fisheye Baby cameras.

Hi Aubrey, welcome back to the Lomography Magazine! How are you doing?

It’s so good to be back and thank you again for having me! I’m so good these days! I just recently moved to California, so while things have been hectic they’re also really exciting. I’ve begun experimenting more with expired film and chemical processes, finding new ways to create.

Since we last spoke, the Diana Baby has seemed to keep its sturdy place in your repertoire. How has your relationship with this camera and overall film photography evolved?

The Diana Baby, my relationship with it has evolved without a doubt. I used to carry three with me at all times, and while I may not carry that many these days, it's absolutely helped me bring the Lomography mindset into the other cameras I have alongside it. The experiment, the ability to just shoot without overthinking, is so valuable to my process now. I wouldn't be here without it.

You got to test out the Fisheye Baby cameras—have you shot 110 in fisheye before? Did you have to adapt the way you normally shoot for this camera?

This was my first instance shooting 110 in fisheye and it definitely changed how I looked through the camera. I was more mindful of how my subject would be distorted so I decided to shoot how I typically do to see the difference in my results and it was absolutely worth it.

The Fisheye Baby results seem like we’re looking through someone’s eye. So cool! Was there a concept for these?

These were taken just before a trip to Europe and before my main move to California. I was just exploring my new area and seeing the flowers in bloom while I still had the chance. It felt like a dream out there and I’m glad it translated the way it did. It felt like I was looking into another world as we walked around and watched the sunset.

You also experimented a lot with the ActionSampler! Can you tell us about these photos?

I became obsessed with the ActionSampler as soon as I got one in my hands. I wanted to see how I could translate my style into motion and this was a perfect way to do so. I’m still trying to find the blend between documentation of my life and art. For around four months I’ve had it by my side at all times, so most of these images are from my two cross-country trips this year, my study abroad trip in Europe, and exploring my new home in California.

The movies you pieced together of the ActionSampler shots give us such a nostalgic feel. Is there a certain soundtrack that comes to mind that you would pair with these?

Ooh this is a hard one! I’m gonna go with Joshua Tree by U2.

What’s coming up for you this summer season? Any more adventures?

As I write this I am preparing for a van trip up the coast to San Francisco and there will be plenty more before the weather breaks. I’m hoping to see as much of the state as I possibly can now that I’m here full time. We are also planning a swap meet tour up to Yellowstone this summer so I am extremely excited to get up by the Tetons!
